Reimagining Google Cloud Certification
The Google Cloud Innovators Get Certified Program offers an excellent pathway for skill growth and professional development. Every year, I need to renew two certificates and aim to add another one, making this program incredibly valuable.
However, the current certification process leaves much to be desired. It begins with choosing between taking the test at home, which involves a cumbersome setup process, or visiting a certification center. I abandoned the home option after discovering I couldn’t use my Mac for the test. The test itself is a series of multiple-choice questions that, in my opinion, fail to accurately gauge the test-taker’s abilities. And the software used for the test? Far from user-friendly.
But there’s a significant opportunity for improvement here. Imagine a certification process where I prepare through daily work, collaboration, and Google Cloud Skills Boost. When I feel ready, I log in to the assessment page, and a friendly bot guides me through the process, starting with a simple identity verification using my camera and microphone.
The bot then asks questions and engages in a dynamic discussion. I’m allowed to look up information as I would in a real-world scenario. This process could take about two hours unless the bot determines that I’m not yet at the desired level. In such cases, it would perform a gap analysis and provide a roadmap to help me reach the required proficiency. Once I’m ready, the bot congratulates me and issues my certificate.
With today’s advancements in AI, multimodal learning, and large language models (LLMs), this vision could transform certification into a smooth, effective process that accurately measures skills while being engaging and enjoyable.
